Ok, maybe the title was a little rash, but we need to be honest. Social Media is not what it used to be.
The internet has had some major shifts in the past couple years. Ever since Facebook and Mark Zuckerburg’s data scandal in 2018, people are becoming less and less enamored with social media. The decline in usage combined with the already exhaustive amount of marketing noise people are exposed to on social media have made it no longer the marketing darling it once was.
Sure younger individuals are enamored with video heavy applications like TikTok and YouTube and there is definitely marketing potential there, but lets be honest, your business probably doesn’t suit those platforms, and THAT’S OK. There’s no point in forcing it to be trendy. Lets face it, your dentist office, law firm, or mom and pop shop probably isn’t going to benefit from lip-sync music videos being views primarily by people who learned about 9/11 in their history class. This doesn’t mean though, that you should just forgo having an online presence entirely.
“If your business is not on the internet, then your business will be out of business.” -Bill Gates
In the 21st century, having an online presence is more important than ever before. As of 2016 (which means this number has only gone up since then) 81% of people research a business or service on the internet prior to making a purchase decision. That’s 25.92 million people searching for businesses online. Yet, 46% of business owners listed “Business currently doesn’t need one” as their #1 reason for not having a website.
“But we have X social media followers and post all the time!” Sure that may be true, but do you really think your post on in store specials or your new product is really going to stand out amongst the cat videos and sports highlights that flood peoples feeds?
Not only do you face touch competition, but statistically your odds of even being seen on social media are LOW. In fact studies have found that the typical social media post is displayed to less than 7% of followers. Realized as well, this is just followers in general, who know’s if they are even interested in doing business with you or they just haven’t gotten around to unfollowing yet!
This is why you need to ensure you have a platform for people who are seeking out your services directly, and there’s no better way than via your own website.
Having a well designed website gives you credibility as a business. However having a poorly designed website will give people a poor first impression and hamper efforts. Your website needs to be treated just like your businesses exterior and entry way. If the first impression of your store is dirty, outdated, and unkempt, how would that effect your business? The same thing is true for your online presence.
There are so many platforms that everyone claims make it “simple” to make a website now and, although that is true in a sense, practice is still required to make things truly aesthetic and functional. If you are running your own business, you likely don’t have time to be fiddling around with a website builder trying to through something together that you HOPE looks good. Sure it would save you a few bucks, but you have more important things to do, and that’s why you hire an expert.
There’s a lot more to creating a website than just choosing a layout and uploading some photos. You need to have understand design principles, optimize photos, make your website responsive for mobile, understand SEO, set up hosting, perform regular updates and maintenance, keep track of metrics to ensure your site is actually performing as intended so you know you aren’t completely wasting your time. To do it correctly can be a very indepth process.
